A new Google report highlights how artificial intelligence is now an integral part of the daily work of technology professionals. The study, conducted by its DORA (DevOps Research and Assessment) research division and based on 5,000 interviews with industry experts worldwide, reveals that 90% of respondents use AI tools. This represents a 14% increase compared to 2024.

The survey comes at a time when the evolution of AI is fueling both excitement and fear, especially regarding its impact on employment. In May, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei predicted a potential increase in unemployment linked to the technology’s spread, though other analysts have downplayed these concerns.

The use of AI among Google engineers

Google confirms that its engineering teams make extensive use of artificial intelligence for tasks ranging from drafting technical documentation to writing and editing code. Ryan J. Salva, who leads the development of the company’s programming tools, including Gemini Code Assist, explained that “the vast majority” of employees are now involved in this process.

“If you’re a Google engineer, using AI is now inevitable ,” Salva told CNN. He believes the technology has reached an intermediate level between autocomplete and understanding more complex commands: it can already perform debugging tasks on various systems, but still requires human oversight and multi-layered security systems.

Competition and market

The Mountain View company is not alone in this scenario. It offers solutions ranging from free versions to packages starting at $45 a month, but it faces competitors like Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic , as well as new emerging companies like Replit and Anysphere , startups that are rapidly gaining market share thanks to the boom in AI applied to software development.

Not all programmers, however, find AI tools equally useful. According to the report, only 20% of respondents said they were “very confident” in the quality of the code produced by AI, while 46% said they were “fairly confident” and 23% said they were “moderately confident.” As for the impact on quality, 31% believed it slightly improved their work, while 30% said it made no significant difference.

Opportunities and the job market

The increasingly widespread integration of artificial intelligence comes amid a complex employment landscape. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, computer science and engineering graduates currently face a higher unemployment rate than those who studied humanities such as art history or English literature.

Job demand has also seen a significant decline : software engineering jobs posted on the Indeed platform dropped by 71% between February 2022 and August 2025.

Some young professionals, while acknowledging the difficulties, remain hopeful. Julio Rodriguez, interviewed by CNN, said he sent out over 150 applications before landing a job.

Automation and limits

Salva emphasizes that not all phases of software development can be automated.

AI tends to simplify repetitive and boring tasks, but it doesn’t replace human expertise in strategic or creative activities. He believes the current widespread adoption of the technology is also due to strong media interest: “Software development is a bit like fashion: when there’s a lot of talk about it, everyone wants to try something new.”
