BI.ZONE specialists have identified two vulnerabilities (CVE-2025-62592 and CVE-2025-61760) in Oracle VirtualBox. When combined, they allowed an attacker to exit a virtual machine and reach the ARM-based macOS host system.

It is noted that this is the first publicly known vulnerability chain of this kind since the release of VirtualBox version 7.1.0 in 2024, which introduced ARM support to macOS.

CVE-2025-62592 (CVSS score 6.0) was discovered in the QemuRamFB virtual graphics card in the MMIO read handler qemuFwCfgMmioRead . This vulnerability allows an attacker to read an unlimited amount of memory beyond the bounds of the array. This allows an attacker to access sensitive data, including randomized base addresses of programs and libraries. The vulnerability only affects VirtualBox for macOS on an ARM processor.

CVE-2025-61760 (CVSS score 7.5) is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the virtioCoreR3VirtqInfo function. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by using information obtained by leveraging CVE-2025-62592. The attacker could then exit the virtual machine and execute arbitrary code on the host, taking control of the hypervisor and other virtual machines.

As a result , the attacker can access the device’s microphone and camera, read and modify any files, including those of other applications . They can also launch new processes, effectively gaining near-complete control over the host operating system.

“When developing an exploit for modern applications, attackers often need two vulnerabilities: one to leak ASLR and one to corrupt process memory structures. The vulnerabilities discovered by our team are self-contained in this chain. Their exploitation is somewhat hindered by protective mitigations such as NX (No-eXecute) and stack canary, but is possible by overriding other local variables of the virtioCoreR3VirtqInfo function,” comments Pavel Blinnikov, head of the vulnerability research team.

Information about the vulnerabilities was reported to the vendor, and on October 21, 2025, Oracle released a critical patch update that addresses both issues.
