Por exemplo, em um contexto médico, se uma IA fosse comprovadamente melhor em ler um resultado de teste e diagnosticar câncer do que um humano, você pegaria a IA em um segundo. Você quer a ferramenta mais precisa. Mas a justiça é mais difícil porque a justiça é inerentemente uma qualidade humana de uma forma que “Este tumor é cancerígeno?” não é. Essa é uma pergunta baseada em fatos. “Qual é a coisa certa a fazer aqui?” é uma pergunta baseada em humanos.

O xadrez fornece uma analogia útil para essa evolução. Durante a maior parte da história, os humanos foram os melhores. Então, na década de 1990, o Deep Blue venceu o melhor humano. Por um tempo depois disso, um bom ser humano emparelhado com um bom computador poderia vencer qualquer um sozinho. Mas há alguns anos, isso mudou novamente, e agora o melhor computador simplesmente vence. Haverá um período intermediário para muitas aplicações em que a combinação humano-IA é ideal, mas, eventualmente, para tarefas baseadas em fatos, a melhor IA provavelmente superará ambas.

O papel duradouro dos humanos está em fazer julgamentos, especialmente quando os valores entram em conflito. Qual é a política de imigração adequada? Não existe uma única resposta “certa”; é uma questão de sentimentos, valores e o que nós, como sociedade, prezamos. Muito da governança social é sobre resolver conflitos entre os direitos das pessoas – meu direito de tocar minha música versus seu direito de ficar quieto. Não há resposta factual lá. Podemos imaginar que as máquinas ajudarão; Talvez, uma vez que nós, humanos, descubramos as regras, as máquinas possam fazer a implementação e devolver os casos difíceis para nós. Mas os julgamentos de valor fundamentais provavelmente permanecerão nosso domínio.
