A Malásia anunciou a construção de um novo sistema de cabos submarinos de fibra óptica para aumentar a conectividade entre as partes leste e oeste do país, com o objetivo de apoiar o crescimento de sua economia digital.

O vice-ministro das Comunicações disse no domingo, 12 de outubro, que o governo aprovou um investimento de RM2 bilhões para construir o projeto, chamado o Sistema de Cabo Submarino Chang Ming . A iniciativa faz parte do governo Conexão de Cabo Submarino Madani (SALAM) programa, que visa melhorar a infraestrutura da rede nacional.

O sistema, aproximadamente 3.190 quilômetros longo, conectará o leste e o oeste da Malásia, proporcionando maior capacidade de transmissão de dados para lidar com o crescimento exponencial do tráfego da Internet, especialmente com a expansão da inteligência artificial e serviços digitais avançados.

Em um evento em Kulai (Johor) , Chong – que também é um DAP Kulai MP – apontou que a atual rede submarina, o 1Sistema de cabos submarinos do povo da Malásia (SCREAM) , que está operacional desde janeiro de 2017 e é aproximadamente 3.820 quilômetros longo, agora quase atingiu seu limite de capacidade.

“O volume de dados que trafegam na internet continua a crescer significativamente, especialmente na era da inteligência artificial”, Chong explicou. “Portanto, é essencial construir um novo sistema de cabos submarinos que proporcione maior capacidade de transmissão e melhore o desempenho da rede entre as duas regiões do país.”

O vice-ministro, no entanto, não indicou a data de início ou conclusão das obras.

A iniciativa também foi confirmada por Primeiro-ministro e ministro das Finanças, Anwar Ibrahim , que em 10 de outubro , durante a apresentação do Orçamento 2026 para o Dewan Rakyat , anunciou a atribuição de RM2 bilhões para o projeto Chang Ming e um outro RM2 bilhões para o desenvolvimento do Nuvem de IA soberana . Este último visa fortalecer a gestão nacional de dados e a segurança de informações confidenciais.

Com esses investimentos, o governo pretende consolidar a posição da Malásia como um centro regional de tecnologia, melhorando a resiliência da infraestrutura digital e da conectividade do país em uma economia global cada vez mais digital.
